Biology is a required full year laboratory science course for all students taken during the freshman year. The course consists of an introduction to the study of Biology with an emphasis on the scientific method of problem solving and on the techniques employed by modern biologists. It is designed to give the student a broad background in Biology, from its early history to current topics and major developments in the field of science. Major themes studied will include: cell theory, genetic continuity of life, evolution, energy transformation, structure and diversity of living organisms, viral histology and transmission of AIDS, human biology and ecology. Lab work is an integral part of the course, where students incorporate material into practical applications of scientific investigation, using the inquiry method. Often, students work in groups to accomplish set goals within a specific time frame making cooperation essential.
